Rotating Internship Program at VSH Hong Kong


Why consider a formal rotating internship?

The rotating and specialty internship programs at VSH Hong Kong have been created according to guidelines set forth by the American Veterinary Medical Association. The full set of guidelines can be found at https://www.avma.org/KB/Policies/Pages/Veterinary-Internships-Guidelines.aspx.


Internships are designed to prepare veterinarians for high-quality service in practice or advanced residency training. The VSH team believes that the primary purpose of an internship is to provide a sound educational program for the intern, guided by specialist mentorship.

We are looking for individuals who display a strong work ethic, excellent communication skills, and dedication to being a true team player. Our interns maintain a positive attitude, particularly toward patients, fellow staff and clients. We currently have space for 1-2 exceptional candidates.

About our internship:

  • 1-year rotating internship, including Internal Medicine, Surgery, and Emergency/Critical Care, with elective rotations in Ophthalmology and/or Cardiology.
  • Interns will be fully supported by specialists
  • Shifts may include holidays and a minimum of two overnight rotations
  • Interns will have primary case care responsibility for emergency cases with support from VSH specialists
  • The caseload at VSH is diverse, consisting mostly of complex medical and surgical cases. General practice services are not provided and are therefore not part of the internship year.
  • Salary will be discussed with applicants who have been selected for interview
  • Successful applicants must obtain registration with the HK Veterinary Surgeons Board, as well as work permits when applicable, prior to the start of the internship. Priority will be given to Hong Kong residents.

Reporting to the Senior Veterinarian, the incumbent will provide veterinary service for over 500 species of marine mammals and terrestrial mammals, including fish, birds, pandas, dolphins, pinnipeds, and other exotic animals in the Park. Deputy Director - Welfare Operations / Head of Welfare Operations


This newly created position, Deputy Director-Welfare Operations / Head of Welfare Operations, will report to our Executive Director and will be charged with leading the shelter veterinary care team. The candidate will need to work closely with other departments including the Welfare Strategy and Research Department in order to further develop and enhance the performance of the SPCA's Animal Welfare Programmes.

Responsibilities:

  • To ensure the efficient and effective execution of the day-to-day duties of the shelter veterinary care team.
  • To plan and implement a comprehensive, cost-effective health care programme for all animals under the care of the SPCA welfare programmes, ensuring their needs are met and that animal welfare standards are maintained in accordance with Society policies and procedures.
  • To ensure excellent customer care at all levels for both internal and external users, responding promptly and according to Society policy to complaints and enquiries.
  • To assist the Executive Director in the development and implementation of strategic initiatives related to improving the SPCA's Welfare Department and the Society as a whole.
  • To work with the Welfare Strategy and Research Department in developing welfare department operational polices ensuring that policies and protocols are in line with the strategic direction set by that department.
  • To further enhance co-operation and communication with all other Departments within the Society.
  • To work with the Welfare Strategy and Research Department and help liaise and develop collaborations with government agencies, animal welfare groups, private veterinary surgeons and other parties interested in animal welfare issues.

Requirements:

  • A veterinary degree with at least 4 years of practical experience in the field of small animal veterinary medicine (registration with the Veterinary Surgeons Board of Hong Kong will be required).
  • A minimum of 2 years practical experience in the field of shelter medicine preferably with experience in a leadership role.
  • Post-graduate training and / or a qualification in shelter medicine is preferred.
  • Management experience with a firm grounding in strategic planning, operational management, budgeting and financial management.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work both independently and within a team.
  • A willingness to travel around the region and a genuine interest in the welfare of all animals.
  • Responsible, systematic and works well under pressure.
  • Drive and enthusiasm.
  • Chinese language skills would be an advantage.

Night Veterinary Assistant Position Vacant


Tai Wai Small Animal and Exotic Hospital has vacancies for 2 experienced Vet Assistants to work during our night shift so we can provide a full 24 hour service for our clients and their pets. Our Hospital prides itself on our high standards of patient care along with client and staff satisfaction.

Essential Criteria:

Exotic opportunity for Veterinary Nurses

Dr. Manuela CRASTA, DVM, PhD, DECVO, graduated from the University of Perugia, Italy in 1997. She immediately commenced her training in animal eye disease management, assisting many American and European Specialist Ophthalmologists from all over the world.

Dr. Crasta is a Diplomate of the European College of Veterinary Ophthalmologists, by examination since 2011.

In 2008 she received her PhD in Veterinary Ophthalmology.

She completed her Residency in Ophthalmology at the Autonomous University of Barcelona, in Spain and at North Carolina State University, in the USA.

She is a regular speaker at national and international Veterinary conferences and courses.

Consulting Veterinary Surgeon


We are pleased to announce that Dr. Ross Christopher Elliot, a Veterinary Surgical Specialist, will be available for consultations and surgery procedures from February 20th until February 28th at Victory Animal Hospital, Mong Kok.

Ross Elliott Graduated from the University of Pretoria, South Africa in 2005. He then entered into a surgical residency at the Bryanston Veterinary Hospital through the University of Pretoria. He completed his residency in small animal surgery in 2011. During this time he completed a dissertation in the surgical CT anatomy of the canine abdomen, which produced 2 publications in Veterinary Surgery. Ross has been working as a specialist surgeon at the Bryanston Veterinary Hospital for the last 6 years as a specialist surgeon.

During this time he has produced multiple publications in international journals. These include an article on successful treatment of a double chambered right ventricle in a dog under cardiopulmonary bypass.

Ross's main surgical interest lies in cranial cruciate ligament surgery, elbow dysplasia and medial shoulder instability in canines, new ways to treat patella luxation in dogs, spinal surgery especially large breed wobblers, urogenital surgery, portosystemic shunt attenuation.

In the last 6 years of referral work Ross has attended an advanced arthroscopic course in Munich, a complete course in linear and hybrid fixation using the Imex systems, a microvascular surgical course and a Biometric stifle replacement course.

Ross is happy to help with any surgical referral and prides himself on excellent patient care and compassion with feedback to the referring veterinarians.
