Ferndale Kennels Pet Relocation Announcement

Dear Industry partners and colleagues- I sincerely hope this message finds you and those you love in good health. These are not easy times for anyone. We would like to take the opportunity to communicate how things in Pet Travel have been affected in this unprecedented time of worldwide instability.

NEW

COVID-19 is severely impeding pets ability to cross borders and relocate to other countries.

  • Airlines: Qantas have cancelled all confirmed future bookings and are no longer accepting any new bookings. Air New Zealand has also stopped accepting bookings along with Qatar, Emirates, Finnair, KLM, Swiss, Lufthansa & Finnair. Other airlines simply don't come to Hong Kong anymore such as United, AA, Air Canada. Airlines started cutting back on their routes and as pets make up a tiny fraction of a percentage of their cargo, more and more airlines stop accepting live animals for travel.
  • Governments: AFCD government offices, that endorse certain documents essential for pet travel have been at restricted work hours, governments in other countries refusing to accept animals from Hong Kong and now we are followed by whole country lock downs.

How long this will last is the million-dollar question. We have no way of knowing as neither do the airlines. At Ferndale we will do our best to pass on any positive news for when things start going back to normal again but please feel free to contact us with any questions and use us a travel resource, and in the meantime, please stay safe.

Coronavirus Pet Travel FAQ's

NEW

  • What should Vets tell their clients about pet travel vaccines and Rabies blood tests?
    • Our best advice for you and your clients is to carry on preparing your pets for any upcoming travel, keep their vaccinations up to date, still carry on and obtain the Rabies blood titre test (RNAT) for those countries like Australia, New Zealand, Japan and Taiwan where a long wait is required.
    • To reduce risks of abandoned pets, please urge your clients to do Rabies blood tests in advance if considering move to countries like Australia (which need RNAT 6 months prior to travel date).
  • What if owners move abroad before their pets?
    • Stuck in a situation where clients need to move yet cannot find anywhere for their furry loved one, Ferndale does have boarding for cats and dogs available and will give discounts to long term boarders along with playtime and doggie walks if required.
  • Are zero pets travelling by planes now?
    • Some small numbers of pets are still travelling but it depends on specific airlines and routes and governments and it's a fraction of normal. There is a huge backlog of people who's pets are due to fly but the move is on hold due to COVID-19.'
  • Will COVID-19 make governments relax pet travel requirements like rabies blood tests?
    • Very unlikely. Australia Government says the current COVID-19 pandemic does not change the existing risks posed by diseases of biosecurity concern to Australia or the need for cats and dogs to meet the import permit conditions in full. Pre-border waiting periods are crucial to effectively manage the biosecurity risks.
  • Will COVID-19 affect Vets sending Rabies Blood out for testing?
    • Yes. BIOBEST lab in UK says rabies serology testing is considered low priority at the moment and will only be performed if they have staff resource to do so. Testing frequency and turnaround times are likely to be severely affected over the next few weeks.
  • Is Ferndale still open for pet shipping enquiries (or boarding)?
    • Yes, we're keeping extremely close track of what airlines, countries, routes, and possibilities we can utilize to help even a few pets get to their destinations as planned or as quickly as possible. We are on limited service with some staff work-from-home and we increased our disinfection use etc.
  • Why is pet travel affected?
    • This affects your clients and their pets because we move pets using air cargo space on scheduled passenger airlines. The airline changes severely
limit our ability to relocate pets until commercial air carriers return to regular schedules.
  • When will pet travel resume?
    • When airlines begin accepting bookings for our furry friends we will let people know who have inquired. We hope that passenger airline cargo capacities will gradually improve late in the second and through the third quarter.

A unique neuro-imaging service, which combines imaging reports with case management advice, at no extra cost!

Vet Oracle Teleneurology is a brand-new concept combining the expertise from leading neurologists and neuroradiologists. It is a unique platform, which puts the patient and clinician's needs at the centre of its reporting service. This includes reporting on a neuro-imaging study (X-ray, MRI or CT), providing guidance on the videos of a puzzling case, or discussing the diagnostic approach or treatment (medical or surgical) of a neurological patient submitted for imaging reporting. Unlike some teleradiology services, we don't just 'report and run'. We believe a complete teleneuroradiology service should include the option for you to seek assistance in the management (diagnostic plan, medical or neurosurgical options) of the case you have submitted to us. This additional advice is provided at no extra cost!

The service is led by renowned veterinary neurology specialists, Dr Laurent Garosi and Prof Simon Platt, who have over 40 years' experience in clinical neurology and neurosurgery between them. They were part of only a handful of neurologists in the world over 20 years ago to be involved with the introduction of MRI in veterinary medicine. Laurent and Simon are well known for their passion and enthusiasm for teaching neurology, which they aim to bring to this unique service that combines imaging interpretation and clinical advice in one report.

Should you need reporting on chest, abdomen or limbs imaging, as part of our neurological work-up, our radiology specialist team will be on hand to assist you as well. In addition to neuro-imaging reports, we provide written advice on the management of clinical or surgical neurology patients. You can submit video footage, neurological examination findings for advice on case management and the best way forward, as well as requesting our opinion on neuro-surgical options.

We believe our pricing is highly competitive and offers the best value for money for the solutions we propose to your clinic. Standard CT or MRI reports (1st body area and 1 to 3 days turnaround time) are charged at 140 USD - with a surcharge of 50 USD for up to 24 hrs turnaround, and 60 USD for each additional body area. For more details, feel free to email us (see below) or check out our brand new website https://vetoracle.com to discover more about the services we provide. Our site includes some useful features like client factsheets, recently published articles, videos of interesting cases, and really cool animated 3D videos of neurological examinations! Submission of all clinical material (including videos, DICOM images of MRI/CT for neurological cases that you need reporting on and clinical advice) is made via our website portal, after an initial registration process.

We look forward to working with you on these complex neurological cases!

Best regards
