A systematic approach to the veterinary patient with suspected neoplasia (cancer) requires pursuing answers to the following questions: Identification of WHAT the mass is (cytological or histopathological diagnosis), WHERE it is (clinical staging for malignant masses) and HOW bad it is (malignant versus benign, grade if malignant). The answers to these questions will provide knowledge of tumour type, grade and clinical stage and allow the clinician to provide pet owners with a range of treatment options and expected prognosis for each treatment option. The principles of surgical oncology and the application of the appropriate SURGICAL DOSE based on these diagnostic and staging tests will be discussed as well as the role of a multimodality therapy approach to treatment.
