Speakers' biography

Professor Andrew Leisewitz

Andrew Leisewitz graduated with his BVSc degree in 1987. This was followed by an Hons in 1991, an MMedVet(Med) in 1995 and a PhD in 2006. Andrew was appointed as a senior lecturer in the then Department of Medicine at Onderstepoort in June 1990. He is now full professor of Companion Animal Clinical Studies and is a Diplomat of the European College of Veterinary Internal Medicine-Companion Animals.

He has worked as a specialist clinician in the Onderstepoort Veterinary Academic Hospital for over 20 years. He is an active teacher of undergraduate and post graduate veterinary students, leads the section of Small Animal Medicine within the Department and is a frequently invited speaker and presenter of continuing education for the profession in the sub-region.

Andy has a wealth of knowledge in complicated skin conditions and chronic ear problems. He qualified from Onderstepoort in 1987 and joined the faculty in 1990. He earned a MMed(Vet)Med degree five years later and completed a doctorate at the University of Oxford in 2007. He is an active researcher and a professor in the veterinary science faculty of the University of Pretoria. He runs a dermatology referral clinic at Onderstepoort and has taught small animal dermatology at under- and postgraduate levels for 25 years.

Professor Andrew is not a dermatologist but there are no dermatologists in South Africa and for the last 25 years He has taught dermatology at an under and post graduate level, conducted over 50 dermatology related CPD lectures across South Africa, Mauritius, Madagascar and Mozambique. He has become the go-to person for the vet industry launching new dermatology products (Virbac for their shampoo range, the local supplier of Malaseb, Zoetis for the soon to be launched Apoquel, Hills and their diets). Andy runs a dermatology clinic within the academic teaching hospital.
