Assistant Technical Officer (Ref. 230117007-IE)


The appointee will be required to:

  1. provide technical and operational support to the Centralised Animal Facilities (CAF) and its users in terms of animal handling, animal breeding, daily operation and experimental techniques;
  2. be responsible for breeding programmes of selected species of mice and rats;
  3. liaise with staff/students from internal units/centres and sister institutions on various aspects of animal husbandry and holding services;
  4. provide administrative and secretarial support to the CAF, including but not limited to the provision of customer service and the maintenance of CAF's operation;
  5. provide training and guidance to the junior staff of the CAF;
  6. perform purchasing duties and liaise with suppliers, contractors and external parties;
  7. stand-in for junior staff to maintain smooth operation of the CAF and uphold its hygienic standards: and
  8. perform any other duties as assigned by the Director of CAF or his/her delegates.

The appointee will be required to work on shift and/or Saturdays/Sundays/public holidays.


Applicants should:

  1. have a recognised degree in Biotechnology, Animal Science or a related discipline, preferably with a relevant master's degree;
  2. have at least two years' hands-on experience in handling laboratory animals, with animal breeding experience being an advantage;
  3. have good knowledge of the use of animals in research and/or animal ethics;
  4. have good computer literacy including MS Word, Excel and PowerPoint;
  5. be able to communicate effectively in both written and spoken English and Chinese, with proficiency in Putonghua being an advantage; and
  6. have good communication and interpersonal skills.

Conditions of Service
A highly competitive remuneration package will be offered. Initial appointment will be on a fixedterm gratuity-bearing contract. Re-engagement thereafter is subject to mutual agreement.
