Two-Day Small Animal Basic Echocardiography Workshop

Participants will be scanning in groups of three to guarantee best practical learning experience and maximise supervised scanning time. Each group will have its own high-end ultrasound system.
Limited to 9 participants only.
Participants are fully responsible for bringing in their own volunteer animals for the practical scanning session (minimum 1 animal per person per day). Animals should be on a leash or kept inside a carrier during lectures and lunch. Sedative and reversal drugs (if required), and stethoscopes are full responsibility of participants. All animals must be up to date on vaccines (Distemper, Parvo, Rabies for dogs, FVRCP for cats) and non-aggressive.
Course Program
Objectives
Having you confident on how to perform a Basic Echocardiogram examination and confident on how to differentiate between cardiac and non-cardiac causes of dyspnoea in cats, as well as how to identify a dog with myxomatous mitral valve disease and who will benefit from Pimobendan treatment. Maximum practical scanning time under supervision and guidance will be provided during both days.
Lectures will be illustrated with large amount of Case Discussion in order to get you familiar with basic Echocardiography interpretation and ultrasonographic findings in most common acquired cardiac diseases in both dogs and cats.
Day 1 – 9 December 2024 (8:30am – 5:30pm):
Echocardiography Introduction, Requirements, Anatomy
Right Parasternal Window: Standard Views, B-mode and M-mode Measurements, Basic Doppler interrogation
Day 2 – 10 December 2024 (8:30am – 5:30pm):
Left Parasternal Window: Standard Views, B-mode and Basic Doppler study.

Dr. Mark Dirven
DVM DECVIM-CA Cardiology
Mark graduated from Utrecht University, The Netherlands in 2004. After graduation, he worked in several companion animal clinics and developed an interest in cardiology. From 2012 onwards, he combined his work in private practice with a residency training program at the university veterinary hospital. In March 2017, he became a European specialist in cardiology (Diplomate ECVIM-CA Cardiology). From 2017 to 2019, he continued to work as a cardiology specialist in a referral only private hospital and the Utrecht university veterinary hospital.
In January 2019 he moved from the Netherlands to Sweden where he is currently based at one of the larger companion animal hospitals in Europe, Evidensia Södra animal hospital in the Stockholm area. He leads the cardio department of the hospital where he is involved in patient care, research and teaching of vets and nurses. Additionally, he is an associate editor for the Journal of Veterinary Cardiology and a board member of the European Society of Veterinary Cardiology.
Dr. Myriam Baranger-Ete
DVM EMSAVM MRCVS
Dr. Myriam Baranger-Ete graduated from Maisons-Alfort National Veterinary University (France) in 1998 then completed a year externship at the Equine hospital of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine of Saint-Hyacinthe, University of Montreal (Canada). There she completed her thesis with honours in equine locomotor pathology and diagnostic ultrasound in 1999.
A move to Hong Kong in 1999 brought her back to Canine and Feline Medicine and she completed the Distance Education Small Animal Sonology Course with the Post-Graduation Foundation of the University of Sydney in 2008, as well as a European Master of Small Animal Veterinary Medicine with the ESAVS (European School for Advanced Veterinary Studies), with the University of Luxemburg. During this training, Dr Myriam realized that an early and accurate diagnosis was key for any therapeutic success and she became passionate and obsessed about Diagnostics since then.
After intensive training, she focused on providing referral ultrasound services and promoting ultrasound education in Asia; co-founding HKVUS, Hong Kong first mobile veterinary ultrasound service in 2013, then developing the services together with Dr Jennifer Kan in Singapore with SVI (Singapore Veterinary Imaging) and in Malaysia with MUS (Mobile Ultrasound Service Sdn Bhd).
Aside of her referral ultrasound clinical work, Dr Myriam very much enjoys her time teaching other veterinarians ultrasound techniques giving seminars, workshops and courses all around Asia and overseas.
She is an active member of the International Veterinary Ultrasound Society, of the European Society of Veterinary Cardiology and of the Australasian Association of Veterinary Diagnostics Imaging.
In love with Asia, Dr Myriam is thrilled to be able to continue actively developing Advanced Diagnostics in the region and to be able to continue supporting her veterinary colleagues with all their diagnostic needs so that they can provide nothing but the best level of cares to their patients.
Dr Myriam is also the Asia Regional Director for Antech -Reference Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratories.
