This conference will unite researchers from academia and industry to discuss the latest developments in genetics and genomics of prevention of disease in farmed, wild, and companion animals. The progress of future research to protect animal health requires deliberate multi-species and multi-disciplinary integration. State-of-the-science presentations from invited speakers and contributed papers will provide the foundation for futuristic discussions of the role of genomics in improving animal and human health.

Satellite event: a two-day short course on statistical design and analysis of microarray experiments will be offered by Dr. Daniel Nettleton, Department of Statistics, Iowa State University, July 11 - 12, 2005. Information on this short course will soon be available as a link on the symposium web site.

Paul GibbsPaul Gibbs graduated as a veterinarian from the University of Bristol in 1967 and subsequently focused his career on the epidemiology, control and prevention of emerging viral diseases. For nearly 10 years he worked at the Institute of Animal Health in the UK on diseases such as foot-and-mouth disease, bluetongue, sheep pox, and rinderpest. In 1979, he joined the newly established College of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Florida. In Florida, apart from teaching, he has worked on several emerging problems and foreign animal diseases that threaten the USA, most recently West Nile virus encephalitis in horses, canine influenza, and bovine spongiform encephalopathy. The focus of his work often takes him overseas to investigate emerging problems. He is a consultant to several international agencies and pharmaceutical companies.

This lecture is jointly sponsored by Hills Pet Nutrition and Royal Canin Hong Kong.
